Balaji Prabhu is producing the movie under the banner ‘Siddharth Movies’. Director Sakthi Krishna says that the film will be based on the life of a common man in Chennai city. Actor Vinod, who debuted as child artist in Bala’s Nanda returned to Kollywood with Suseendran’s Naan Mahan Alla.
Vinod will be shifting to ‘Oodhaari’ after completing his Malayalam movie directed by Mahadevan. Insiders of the movie adds that shoot will begin from this month and will end up in February. The female lead role will be played by Vishnupriya, who is presently acting in ‘Naanga’ movie as heroine.

To begin with, let’s try and think out if there is any purpose behind making a movie like ‘Duplicate’. Of course Suraaj Venjaramoodu, who is playing the hero for the first time, has a fan-following of his own, as a comedian. But does that mean that he can carry a film solely on his shoulders? And especially since he is not doing in the film what he is best at doing, i.e., comedy, will his fans really be satisfied with his first film as hero? So, ultimately who gains out of the movie? Not Suraaj anyway, except perhaps on financial terms. Not the director or producer either. And the film-viewing public? They too gain nothing. And nothing for Malayalam Cinema either. So, why such a film?
‘Duplicate’ begins as the story of Sivankutty (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), a young guy living in a village and trying his best to perpetually ward off people to whom he owe money. He has to make some money and clear off his debts and then take marry his uncle’s daughter Meenakshi (Roopashri), while his uncle ‘Pattalam’ Keshavan (Laloo Aalex) is up in arms against their love. Sivankutty’s constant companion is his paternal uncle P.Suresh (Innocent), whose sole aim in life is to get drunk all the time. It’s into this situation that barges in Jeevan (Suraaj in a double role), a look-alike of Sivankutty, who accidentally happens to take Sivankutty’s place while Sivankutty happens to reach Jeevan’s house. Jeevan in fact is a rich guy, but one with his share of problems. How the two guys’ lives get entangled and what all happens then forms the plot of ‘Duplicate’.
‘Duplicate’ is all duplicate; there’s nothing original about the subject. We have seen it so many times before. And there is nothing spectacular that happens during the development of the plot either. Subject-wise, treatment wise and on the performance side and technical side, the film is replete with flaws of all kinds. There is nothing that would make you call the film a good one. It’s as futile watching the movie as futile perhaps is making it, with so much of money being spent (‘Duplicate’ is no big budget movie, but even a low budget one incurs a budget of lakhs and lakhs of rupees).
Performances
It can’t be said that Suraaj Venjaramoodu gives a poor performance in the double role, that of Sivankutty and that of Jeevan. But of course thecharacters are a bit heavy for him and this is not what’s expected of him too. Suraaj has his limitations as an actor and characters for him should be created with that in mind. Innocent has nothing much to do as P.Suresh and his character loses significance mid-way. The others are all just so so, with Salim Kumar, Bijukuttan, Laloo Aalex etc delivering their trademark performances. The heroine doesn’t even deserve mention.
Technical aspects
Nothing much to mention about the technical aspects of ‘Duplicate’.
Music
Songs penned by Santhosh Varma, Anil Panachooran and Suresh Kaavil and set to tune by Alex Paul are all far from impressive.
Script
Shani Khader, who has written the script, hasn’t done anything worth mentioning. It’s just an average kind of thing, with not much importance given to characterization or the development of scenes.
Direction
It’s rather difficult to say if Shibu Prabakhar, the director of the movie will have a future in cinema or not. In fact, it’s difficult to assess his capabilities based on this film, which has nothing much to work on and doesn’t have a great cast either. But it’s the director who has to take care of these aspects too, namely fixing the subject and of course the casting too. But in present day Malayalam Cinema, a debutant director hasn’t much of a say in such matters. So if a second film happens for this director (let’s hope so), then only will we be able to judge him.
Overall verdict- Wasted effort.

In keeping with his first two films (‘Pakal’ and ‘Nagaram’), Nishad.M.A (whose third film was ‘Ayudham’) delivers yet another movie with a message to convey. ‘Vairam’, Nishad’s fourth film, narrates a good story in a convincing manner.
‘Vairam’ focuses on the woes of the parents of a young girl, Vairamani (Dhanya Mary), who’s brutally raped and then thrown into a well and killed. Sivarajan (Pasupathy), Vairamani’s father, has been a bank manager and Devi (Meera Vasudev), her mother a housewife. Their world revolved around Vairamani and they loved her much, like any other parents. And hence they are shattered when she is raped and killed. When Sivarajan comes to know that it was Thalikkulam Josekutty (Jayasurya) who did this, he sets out and finds Josekutty and kills him. And when the trial begins, he doesn’t defend himself and consequently is awarded life imprisonment. When Sivarajan is taken out of court, he is attacked by a group of goons and lynched, almost todeath. It is from here that ‘Vairam’ begins. And then, a young journalist Annie Jacob (Samvritha Sunil) sets out to bring out Sivarajan’s story and let the world know what had befallen Sivarajan and his family. Advocate Ravi Varma (Suresh Gopi), who was the crown counsel for Sivarajan, does all that he could too. Then comes in Crime Branch S.P Thomas Eeraly (Mukesh), who investigates it all afresh. It all moves to a well executed climax.
Performances
Pasupathy delivers an excellent performance as Sivarajan and wins our appreciation and touches our hearts. Suresh Gopi is his very usual self.Mukesh does a convincing job. Jayasurya impresses us as Josekutty. Dhanya Mary (of ‘Thalappavu’ fame) is good as Vairamani. Meera Vasudev is good. Thilakan and KPAC Lalitha are first rate. All the others in the cast have done justice to their respective roles.
Technical aspects
Cinematography (by Sanjeev Shankar), art work (by Gireesh Menon) andediting (by Samjith) are very much in sync with the mood and the theme of the film.
Music
Gireesh Puthencherry and M.Jayachandran have teamed up once again to give us some good songs, the best of them being “Vennilavu…”, rendered soulfully by Yesudas. Rajamani has done an excellent job of the background score.
Script
Cherian Kalpakavvadi, who has scripted many notable movies, mainly for directors Venu Nagavalli and Mohan, delivers a well balanced script, which forms the real strength of ‘Vairam’.
Direction
Nishad .M.A seems to be bettering himself as a director with every movie. It’s good to see that he is totally in control of things and has done a neat job in ‘Vairam’. Congrats, Nishad for delivering a well-intentioned movie

Prithviraj’s eagerly awaited Anwar directed by Amal Neerad was censored on Tuesday (Oct 12), by the regional censors in Thiruvananthapuram.
The film was cleared by the censors with an U/A certificate with cuts.
The theme of the film based on terrorism is said to be controversial, though the censors feel there is a nice message in the film.
Prithviraj is said to be fantastic in the film which also has Mamta Mohandas, Prakash Raj, Lal and others. The music of Gopi Sundar is already a chartbuster.
Anwar is releasing big as Red Carpet Movies have booked nearly 100 screens. It will be the biggest ever release for a solo Prithviraj film.
Ashram sources say the Tamil star dreamt of a married life with Nityananda. Is believed to have hatched plot with swami’s personal secretary
According to ashram sources, Tamil film-star Ranjitha dreamt of a married life with self-styled godman swami Paramhansa Nityananda and her possessiveness made her expose him on TV channels.
Ranjitha, who is three years elder to Nityananda (32), was married to an army officer with two children, when she was introduced to him three years back by veteran star K R Vijaya’s niece Sudha, a full-time devotee.
“She was not a regular visitor in the beginning,” said the source. “The swami’s charm gradually made her fall for him and she even decided to shift base from Chennai to Bangalore.” Ranjitha filed for divorce some time ago and the matter is pending in the court.
After getting intimate with the swami, she is understood to have asked him to marry her and even got a positive response.
Ashram sources say she could have convinced him by giving the instance of Vidyabhushan of Kukke Subramanya Matt, who renounced his sanyas to marry a medical student.
Lenin Karuppan, a close aide to the swamy, who owned up his role in taping the sexual acts, was also close to Ranjitha and used to call her ‘anni’ (sister-in-law) occasionally. Although Nityananda assured Ranjitha that he would marry her, he was worried about the property worth several hundred crore rupees that he would have to give up along with his sanyas.
Eventually, the swami not only turned down her proposal but also made things worse by seeing other women. A possessive Ranjitha pleaded with him several times and could have turned vindictive when her pleas fell on deaf ears.
“I think Karuppan and Ranjitha hatched the plan together,” said the source. “I recall that they spoke quite casually to each other since a long time.”
Karuppan is also understood to have blackmailed the swami just a month ago but Nityananda was not in a position to oblige.
“Please don’t force me to comment,” said Swamy Sevanda, personal secretary to Nityananda. “I know both Karuppan and Ranjitha and also know that they are not honest,” he said. There is also an unconfirmed report of Ranjitha attempting suicide on Saturday. She was learnt to be in Kerala yesterday.
Meanwhile, Nityananda has uploaded his video statement on his ashram website from an undisclosed location. The statement says that the controversy is a conspiracy hatched against him and he would soon come out clean.
When everyone is looking for actress Ranjitha, she is not traceable. There were rumors that she even tried to commit suicide. As per the sources she is hiding in Hyderabad.
It is said that she is staying with her actress friend here ever since the sex tapes were screened on TV channels. It is said that Ranjitha’s husband Rakesh Menon, who married her after falling love has got disturbed mentally over the news. He works for Indian Army. Meanwhile police are in search of Nithyananda Swamy.
But then, on the other hand, there are those who say that Ranjitha is the more blackmailing types and even this video was made with the intention of blackmailing the Swami. However, the plan misfired and it somehow went into the hands of the media and that has collapsed the whole sketch.
The tensions are high in the Telugu cine circuit amongst the directors and those associated to Ranjitha. She was seen in the movie ‘Maavichiguru’ as the second heroine and Sriramulayya etc. For now, the suicide news just looks like a made up story by Tamil sources.

It seems that Superstar Rajinikanth is scared for his life. The deaths of his close friend Vishnuvardhan, the Kannada actor, and co-star Soundarya might have evoked the fear in him. Malayalam film Manichithra Thaazhu was remade in Kannada with Vishnuvardhan titled Aapta Mitra and in Tamil with Rajinikanth titled Chandramukhi. The film dealt with a spirit Nagavalli who is an imaginated one.
But Vishnuvardhan’s and Soundarya, who died in an air crash one month before the film’s release in 2004, reflected that the spirit of Nagavalli claimed both deaths. Rajinikanth was absolutely shocked by the two deaths. So he conducted a Maha Mrutyunjaya homa (to ward off death) and visited several shrines in and around Mysore to counter the negative energy and evil forces. A senior executive at Mysore’s Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel confirmed that Rajinikanth and his family stayed in their hotel conducting poojas and visiting pilgrimages. Is he really scared?? or is it the maya of Nagavalli- the unknown spirit..
